Guest lecture by photographer Mingo Venero at the MA 'International Studies on Media, Power and Difference'

25.01.2019

In the last class of “Children, Youth and the Media”, we received photographer Mingo Venero as a guest speaker. Mingo has much experience in photographing children who live in poverty, but from a different perspective than we normally expect when we think of child poverty. Questions such as ‘What is poverty?’, ‘Is it just in Africa?’ and ‘How is (child) poverty portrayed by mainstream media?’ are important questions to ask from this viewpoint. While he also photographed children in Bolivia, Uruguay and Kenya, he also made photographs in his home country Spain about child poverty. These photos show a different image of our general idea of this kind of poverty.

For Mingo, it is very important to respect the dignity of the children he photographs, and to achieve this he does not only make the picture, but also tries to interact with the children and their environment. If you want to see more photos from Mingo, take a look at his wonderful website: http://mingovenero.com/. We want to thank Mingo for his very interesting talk and his efforts in giving his presentation in English.
