Travel

We strongly recommend that you make your arrangements for travel and lodging well in advance of the event, as Barcelona is a very popular tourist and business destination.

The Barcelona airport (abbreviation: BCN) is located in a nearby town, Prat de Llobregat, and is served by all major European carriers and many low-cost airlines. The centre of Barcelona can be easily reached via public transportation:

By taxi

  • A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs approximately 35 euros (depending on traffic; rates higher at night).

By train (Terminal 2)

  • Line R2 to Estació de Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or El Clot. (***El Clot Station is just 10 minutes away on foot from Universitat Pompeu Fabra.)
  • Frequency: every 30 min, from 06:08 to 23:38.
  • Price: 4,20€ single ticket or 1,14€ if you hold a T-Casual card (11,35€), which is valid for 10 journeys (including bus, tram and metro).
  • There is a free shuttle bus connecting Terminals 1 and 2.

By metro (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2)

  • Line 9 Sud to Torrassa + Line 1 to city centre and to the conference venue.
  • Frequency: every 7 minutes
  • Price: 4,60€ single ticket

***You cannot use a standard metro ticket or a T-Casual card. You need to buy the special Metro Airport Ticket called Bitllet Aeroport.

Barcelona is also relatively close to two other airports that are served by low-cost airlines, especially during the summer months. Travelling within Barcelona

The Barcelona public transit network is operated by two companies:

The same ticket is used for both kinds of service. Tickets can be bought in metro stations, some "La Caixa" ATMs, and many tobacco shops ("estancs"). For more information on tickets click here. The best option for most people is a multiple ride "T-Casual" (for one zone), which can be shared by various people at the same time.

The metro operates from 5:00 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays; from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Fridays, and non-stop on Saturdays. Click here for interactive metro map.

These metro lines are complemented by a network of suburban railways operated by RENFE Rodalies on 4 cross-city routes, and the new tram lines running in the north and the south of the metropolitan area.

Taxi: Taxis are moderately priced and easy to find on the street. Taxis in Barcelona are easily recognizable by their colours (yellow and black). A green light on top of the taxi means it is available.

Useful information about Barcelona

Barcelona is not a dangerous city, but there are quite a lot of pickpockets and muggers active, especially downwtown, at tourist attractions and places like train or metro stations, or at the airport. It only takes a minimal effort to pay a bit of extra attention to where and how you are carrying your wallet, bag or backpack, and it spares you the ordeal of having your documents and money stolen, your camera or your notebook. Please keep an eye on those items while you're walking in the street or sitting in public places. You don't need to get obsessed with this, just a bit careful!

In case of emergency, you can call the central alarm number 112, which is free from any phone, or send an SMS to the number 679 43 62 00. You can also request the applications for smartphones to contact with emergency services through pictograms, videos in Catalan Sign Language and Spanish Sign Language, and a geolocation service. Click here for more information about access to the 112 Catalonia emergency telephone line.
