AI is no longer hot news and is radically impacting research and development … and the legal world. This session presents, explores and provides some guidance on the legal issues raised by AI for research organisations, both as a research tool and a research result. How are AI models, systems and AI results protected? Can we use open licensed models and data? What is all this about the AI Act and regulatory compliance? And what do we do with the training, RAG or fine-tuning data?

Malcolm Bain, partner at Across Legal, Barcelona, has been practicing IP and IT law since the dot.com era, through cloud, machine learning and now AI and data. Malcolm has worked with universities and research organisations for IP management, audits and tech transfer, and advises industry partners for IP licensing, protection and commercial exploitation of IP and technology assets.
