Last Friday, October 24th, the JOVIS group held the hybrid-format seminar “Politics, Education, and Skateboarding” on the Poblenou campus. The event featured three presentations, each examining key issues facing contemporary youth.

Dr. Maricela Portillo Sánchez began the seminar with a reflection on the relationship between young people and politics in Mexico, highlighting the role of alternative movements such as YoSoy132, feminist mobilizations, and digital activism amid ongoing political and social change.

Next, Letícia Galvão presented a multi-sited ethnography of women’s skateboarding practices in Barcelona and Aracaju. Her research analyzes gender inequalities in public spaces and the ability of young women to reshape these environments.

Finally, Dr. Pedro Núñez examined political dynamics and sensibilities in Argentine secondary schools, focusing on the diversity of student identities, the youth vote, and the tensions between progressive and conservative stances among students.

The seminar underscored the need to rethink the social and political spaces where youth engage, fostering dialogue and research for critical social transformation.
