JOVIS closes the year with a seminar on hip-hop as a tool for social transformation

On December 18, 2025, JOVIS postdoctoral researcher Nele Hansen led the seminar “Hip-Hop Culture as a Tool for Social Transformation: Education, Methodologies, and Community Empowerment through Creativity.” The session explored how hip-hop can contribute to young people’s socio-emotional well-being, the development of lifelong learning skills, community empowerment, and entrepreneurship promotion, as well as its role in preventing social exclusion. Across different educational contexts, participants highlighted hip-hop’s capacity to strengthen psycho-emotional skills and foster meaningful learning.
A round table was organized with prominent members of the hip-hop community, who shared experiences of using hip-hop as a pedagogical tool and as an instrument for social transformation in different countries.
The seminar was aimed at an academic and professional audience from the fields of education, anthropology, social education, and mental health, and included representatives from the Catalan International Institute for Peace (ICIP) and from the departments of education, youth, and cooperation and development of the Government of Catalonia.
