PRESENTATION

The "young" and "young" concepts add up to almost 400 million entries in the Google search engine. Undoubtedly, young people have gained a central role in the design and implementation of political agendas - at local, national and transnational levels - as well as media - with special emphasis on the virtual field. This has been accompanied by a more than significant increase in the interest of the Academy in regard to the study, analysis and theoretical-conceptual reflection around the many different problems that currently affect young people such as - among other topics - schooling and employment; emancipation and access to housing; cultural production and consumption; (in) formal political participation; segregation, exclusion and racism; patriarchy and sexist violence; repression and conflict, etc. All this is deeply nuanced by the different geographical, social, cultural, economic, political and social contexts in which young people develop their identities.

However, an important part of the scientific literature on youth that has been produced in recent decades comes from the Anglo-Saxon world, marking - in turn and to a large extent - the way in which we conceive young people not only of the reduced Global North but of the Global South with regard, in particular, to the values, speeches, voices, grammars and practices produced, reproduced and consumed by the youth of Latin American countries. A growing number of academics have begun to explore the multiple, complex and vibrant worlds of youth cultures from all continents. This diversification of geographical areas and perspectives seems, in fact, essential to understand the mosaic of contemporary youth cultures in a rapidly changing and highly connected world. In addition, in the current context of deep uncertainty in many Latin American countries, research on young people becomes a task of extreme complexity, both in terms of the theoretical-conceptual and methodological approach, as in development of ethnographic field work, as well as in the implementation of new youth policies. To this are added the mechanisms of repression for those researchers who, within the framework of a reflexive anthropology, display an academic activism that is an intrinsic and fundamental part of their profession as a researcher.

Given this, the application of a good part of the ‘classics’ paradigms, concepts and theoretical-conceptual and methodological tools in complex contexts suffers from some difficulty. This leads us to discuss, (re) think - and even, perhaps in some cases - (re) define the set of participatory research methodologies with young people, especially as regards not only the how and why of the methodologies participatory, especially with regard to the collection of ethnographic data and its processing, but especially in relation to the intersectionality and simultaneity of the different participatory research methods.
