The project aims to shed light on the connections between the contemporary
phenomena of colonialism and migration between the last decades of the 19th
century and the first half of the 20th century in the making of modern nations,
contributing to refine the historical categories of colonialism and emigration in a
number of cases Latin America, Southern, Central and Eastern Europe. It sets out to
highlight how individuals were perceived or perceived themselves as colonial agents,
victims, exploited workers, depending on the circumstances and the points of view.
The project will revolve around four main inter-twined axes: disciplines (biomedical
sciences; museology; engineering); places (museums, hospitals, scientific
institutions, agricultural colonies); companies and corporations (large companies,
but also smaller ones); agents (physicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, women
entrepreneurs, workers, children refugees, but also individuals whose story is of
particular interest, and even animals).
