The Permanent and Interuniversity Research Seminar on the History of the Catalan Law «Josep Maria Font i Rius» (SFR) is an interuniversity research unit with a long history.

It began on 1993 to honor the master of the great historian of Catalan law Josep Maria Font i Rius (see an interview in this vídeo) and about the research project funded by the MEC (PB-93-0404) «Història d’una Institució Jurídica: la Generalitat de Catalunya a les èpoques medieval i moderna». The project has resulted in numerous works, articles and books, which include two doctoral theses on the Història de la Generalitat de Catalunya (one with an extraordinary doctorate prize) and two on the Mostassaf de Barcelona i les seves Ordinacions and about the Senyoriu i el Municipi a la Catalunya Nova, all of them with published results.

This interuniversity unit of research continued to be cohesive on a new research project funded by the MEC (PB-96-0284) «Història d’una institució Jurídica: la Monarquia a la Corona d’Aragó» (1996), which was reflected in the celebration of the Congrés Internacional sobre les Corts Generals de la Corona d’Aragó del 1585 in Montsó, with published results (Ius Fugit, n.10-11).

Then, the research project funded by the MEC (BJU 2000-0971) (2000) about «Els Juristes i el Dret a la Corona d’Aragó» has been worked on and, as a result of a Convention with the Fundació Noguera, a doctoral thesis about the Catalan jurist Joan Pere Fontanella (1576-1649), which has obtained the extraordinary doctoral prize, has been defended and has given birth to a first book published by the  Fundació Noguera (2012). The I and II Jornades d’Estudi sobre Juristes i Notaris a Cervera were held within the project with the collaboration of the Fundació Roca Sastre and the UNED. The acts of these workshops have been published, respectively, in the n. 12 i 13-14, Ius Fugit. Five doctoral theses have also been defended on this subject: on the jurist Pere Albert i les seves Commemoracions; on the Ordinacions de Sanctacilia and their problems (with an extraordinary doctorate prize), about  Raymond Saleilles i la lluita per al dret comparat, about Ramon Martí d’Eixalà and the Escola jurídica catalana and about the first years of the Diputació Provincial de Tarragona, which obtained the extraordinary doctorate prize.

Without a continuity solution, the SFR obtained MCT funding (BJU2003-09552- CO3-01) for a coordinated research project, in a certain way following the previous ones, on the subject: «El juristes i la construcció d’un sistema de Dret Civil: el cas de Catalunya (s. XIII-XX)» (2003). Within this period, a doctoral thesis and several DEA reports were defended, and books and articles were published.

Then, the SFR research group participated in the coordinated research project «El dret històric en els pobles d’Espanya: àmbits públic i privat (s. XI-XXI)», that received funding from the MEC (SEJ 2006-1501-CO-01, 2006).

In addition, the SFR has been recognized as a Consolidated Research Group of the Generalitat de Catalunya on three occasions (2005SGR117, 2009SGR766 i 2014SGR295) with grants that allowed the celebration of the «III Jornades d’Estudi sobre Juristes i Notaris a Cervera (2006) sobre Decrets de Nova Planta, imposicions borbòniques i Universitat de Cervera», «IV Jornades sobre els drets històrics i l’Autonomia» in Barcelona (UPF 2010), «V Jornades sobre Praxis històrica del dret i al·legacions jurídiques» in Tarragona (URV 2011) and «VI Jornades sobre Els juristes catalans i l'Estat» in Barcelona (IEC-Registradors de Catalunya 2013). The Revista d’Història del Dret de la Corona d’Aragó Ius Fugit has published acts of these workshops in n. 15, 16 i 17. Since 2010, members of the SFR of the UdG have promoted the portal íberoamericano de historia del derecho.

The SFR has benefited from the help of the MEC for its project on «Els juristes catalans i les formes del poder públic a Catalunya: monarquies i repúbliques (s. XIII-XX)» (DER2010-21986-C02-01); it has also obtained another MICINN grant for the project «Juristes Hispànics: entre l’imperi del dret i la gestió del poder» (DER2013-43431-P) and the project «De la Iurisdictio a la Soberanía; formas de organización política y jurídica de las monarquías hispánicas (siglos XIII-XX)» (DER2016-75830-P).

In recent years, doctoral theses have been defended by members of the SFR on «La justicia a fines del siglo XIX, un caso concreto: la audiencia de lo criminal de Manresa (1882-1892)»; «El Municipi Constitucional de Vic (1820-1823)»; «Derecho, muerte y matrimonio: la familia matrimonial en el Mediterráneo cristiano, desde la Antigüedad al final de la Eda Media»; «La casa de la moneda de Barcelona: els col·legis d’obrers i de moneders de la Corona d’Aragó» i «El régimen jurídico de la desamortización y su práctica en Barcelona: el caso del convento de Sant Josep/mercat de la Boquería (1586-1853)». 

The collection «Estudis d’Història del Dret» is open to the publication of research work in this field of knowledge, adopting the usual criteria governing the dissemination and editorial quality of the study collections.
