On October 7, 2011, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Liberia), Leymah Gbowee (Liberia) and Tawakkul Karman (Yemen) in recognition of their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for the rights of women to participate fully in planning tasks.

The fact that the award has been granted to three women is especially remarkable because it implies a reduction in male representation among the winners. It should be noted that of the 909 winners from 1901, only 44 have been awarded to women, this is  5%. Although peace prize is the most feminized, with 15 winners, it is still one step ahead. According to the Nobel’s Committee comments, democracy and lasting peace cannot be achieved in the world if women do not have the same opportunities as men when it comes to influencing development at all levels of the society

a) Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Liberia, 1938): She is the current president of Liberia since 2006 and the first female leader of an African country. She is also known for her contribution in order to end the armed conflict in Liberia, a civil war that lasted 14 years. Her constant struggle against corruption and reforms in the country made her worthy of the nickname of the "Iron Lady."

b) Leymah Gbowee (Liberia, 1972): She led a pacifist movement for women of different ethnic groups and religions who managed to end the country's civil war. Among others, she successfully promoted the famous "sex strike" among women so that the combatants left their weapons. In 2006, he founded the NGO "Women Peace and Security Network Africa".

c) Tawakkul Karman (Yemen, 1979): She is an icon of the opposition against the Abudallah Saleh regime, after years of political activism in defense of human rights. When she was at the helm of the opposition movement, she was arrested before the protests began on January 24, but shortly thereafter she was released. She is known for having encamped in Al Taguir and leading habitual protests, demanding the release of political prisoners in Yemen..
