Alma y Palabra: San Juan de la Cruz - From February 6th to 11th, 2024

A spiritual journey towards internalization, towards self-discovery, the true self.

The staging directed by Lluís Homar combines three artistic disciplines: the mystical poetry of San Juan de la Cruz, music with pieces from Mompou's Música Callada, and painting with Velázquez's Christ Crucified. In Lluís Homar's words, "three wonderful tools of light to transition from unrest to tranquility." The production highlights the path leading to the renunciation of material goods to encounter oneself and the transcendent. "San Juan speaks to us about renunciation, that even though our instinct drives us to want everything, Being involves letting go of everything; going against the current, having nothing, emptying oneself of everything that apparently provides comfort, and delving into a completely unknown space that, by discarding the usual, puts us on a path of vertigo," as stated by Lluís Homar.

In the performance, Adriana Ozores and Lluís Homar give voice to the verses of our great mystic poet, accompanied on the piano by Emili Brugalla, who interprets a selection of pieces from Frederic Mompou's Música Callada. Adriana Ozores emphasizes, "I love poetry, and I love San Juan de la Cruz. As good poetry should be, he is a free poet who expresses the deepest, darkest, uncertain, and elusive corners of his soul. So, in some way, we encounter all of that when we interpret the poetry of San Juan or the music of Mompou. It's an encounter of the spectator with all of this. And that's what we offer to the public. It's a journey, a remembrance, or an approach to that transcendence that, in some way, we all touch or yearn to touch at some point."

El Templo Vacío - From February 13 to 18, 2024

The production explores some of the leading texts of Spanish mystical literature, which, according to Lluís Homar, co-director and performer, "is built by digesting other mystical traditions present in our country, especially the Jewish and Muslim traditions. To this sum of traditions, we must add the entire theological tradition that European culture provokes through the acceptance of its Judeo-Christian cultural roots."

Performance in Catalan and Spanish. More information on the Teatre Romea website.
