The marble woman who looks into my eyes: the representation of the female figure in the Montjuïc Cemetery
Date: Saturday, March 11th
SOLD OUT
The Montjuïc or South-West Cemetery was inaugurated in 1883 to cover the needs of the city of Barcelona, which was in full urban expansion as a result of commercial, industrial and social growth, and which was preparing for the Universal Exhibition of 1888 by the mayor Rius i Taulet. The largest burial ground in the city will allow us to walk through a real open-air museum with works by the best artists of Modernism, Noucentisme, or Realism; visit the grave of the main personalities of our society; get a taste of funerary symbology; or find curiosities and similarities between the city of the living and the city of the dead.
We will focus on the main examples of female representation in the cemetery to discover that sensuality, pain, sadness, resignation, melancholy or the soul look at us through female eyes. During the route we will compare it with different tombs where the female figure has been represented as a mother or wife and with the representation of the man.
