About the event

From  11/15/2016 to 11/16/2016

Sala de Graus A. Calsamiglia (room 40.035), Edifici Roger de Llúria

The Symposium on Primitivism in Europe and America aims to open a debate between different scholars on the subject of the mutual appropriation, assimilation and exchange between Amerindian societies and their artistic practices, and European art collectors, anthropologists and artists, since Colonial times.

On the one hand, we would like to open a discussion on the appropriation of the Indigenous Art objects from the Americas by Western culture since the first collections of Primitive Art created during Colonial expeditions, as well as the acquired interest of avant-garde and contemporary artists in the aesthetic forms of Amerindian cultures and Non-Occidental cultures in general. On the other hand, we would like to highlight the importance of the assimilation process of the European culture by the Indigenous societies, and the introduction of European traits in their own aesthetic practices.

During these two days of symposium, we will open four different tables of discussion that include lectures and round tables by specialized scholars and the presentation and discussion of two documentaries on Indigenous societies from North America and The Amazon. These discussions will be organized according to the following Subjects:

  1. Primitivism and Amerindian Cultures
  2. Indigenous Societies in Documentaries
  3. Primitivism in Europe
  4. Museography, Curatorship and Primitivism
