The UNESCO Chair on Language Policies for Multilingualism includes seven lines of work:

  1. Multilingualism and internationalisation
  2. Multilingualism and intercultural mediation
  3. Multilingualism and education
  4. Multilingualism, translation and accessibility
  5. Multilingualism, economy and language rights
  6. Multilingualism, information and communication technologies.
  7. Multilingualism, migration and diasporas

Research conducted within the UNESCO Chair has as primary goal to contribute to the international debates on the role of languages for the SDG and the 2030 Agenda.

UPF also contributes to the Chair by introducing a new line of research: Discourse Analysis and Language Ideologies, developed with the UPF’s Research Group on Discourse and Translation Studies (GEDIT). Other than this line of research, UPF will also develop their project within the following work areas:

  • Multilingualism in education, especially in territories with majority/minority languages and the role of English in compulsory and higher education.
  • Languages and migration, specifically the role of languages for migrant integration and intercultural mediation.
  • Language rights and language policies, especially in regions with majority/minority languages.

Research within the UNESCO Chair is open to any university member wishing to conduct research in any of the three UPF lines of research or the broader seven work areas developed within the Chair as a whole. The final goal is to strengthen international cooperation and develop joint interdisciplinary projects between the Chair members.
