Women in Iberian migrations in the Modern Age: an uncertain journey, by Ofelia Rey, Full Professor of Modern History (University of Santiago de Compostela)

18 October 2023 | Josep Fontana Chair

ABSTRACT: At the height of gender studies, the importance of knowing why, how, from where and to where women moved before the nineteenth century has hardly been considered. Ofelia Rey’s book, El vuelo corto. Mujeres y migraciones en la Edad Moderna, presents an in-depth study of the relationship between women, mobility, and migration, providing information on their role as migrants, on sedentary women and on those who were affected by the absence of men. The definition of the position of these groups in terms of mobility is made from a perspective that combines demographic and economic dimensions with social and cultural factors, and even personal factors, imperceptible to historical research.
