Today, the Ideograma – UPF Chair in Political Communication and Democracy has organized, together with the POLCOM-GRP research group, an introductory session on the Portuguese party system, led by Carla Baptista, professor of Political Communication and Journalism at the Universidad Nova from Lisbon.

Baptista giving the session.

Baptista, has been presented by the coordinator of the Chair, Aleix Martí, who has highlighted the lack of knowledge between the political dynamics of Portugal and Spain, despite being neighbors and having many ties at a cultural and political level.

Next, Baptista has given us a brief contextualization of the latest electoral events in Portugal, such as the last legislative elections in which Antonio Costa obtained an absolute majority, leaving behind the government pact with the Bloco and the PCP.

It has also offered a comparison with Spain around the level of trust in the political institutions of each country and the polarization of the debate, with the Spanish being the ones with the worst rates.

Finally, it has shown us how in Spain the forms of political mobilization depend directly on political parties, while in Portugal they have been more linked to unions and student movements.
