Farmed chickens are arguably the most abused animals on the planet. More chickens are raised and killed for food than all other land animals combined. Of these, hens experience the longest abuse. 

Exploited for their eggs, their reproductive system is used to the point of exhaustion. They are forced to produce as many as 300 eggs annually, compared to the 15 eggs per year laid by their ancestors in nature. Because of this, both caged and free-range hens suffer from a long list of painful diseases, including reproductive tumours, ovarian carcinomas, infections and osteoporosis. These are conditions they cannot avoid even when rescued by animal sanctuaries, since their bodies have been artificially selected for these extra laying cycles for generations. Once worn out, they are sent to slaughter, generally to be turned into cat or dog food, or cheap soups.

The number of chickens exploited worldwide increases every year and has more than doubled since 1990. In 2018, there were on average 24 billion female chickens exploited every day for their eggs in the world, up from 15 billion in 2000. That year, as many hens as the total human population (7,6 billion) were killed once considered spent.

Chickens are, however, just as cognitively, emotionally and socially complex as most other birds and mammals; smart beings with personality and self-awareness (Lori Marino, "Thinking Chickens: A Review of Cognition, Emotion, and Behavior in the Domestic Chicken", Animal Cognition, 2017, 20: 127–147).
