Abstract

We introduce an evolutionary social science approach to intergenerational family relations. This approach provides a single framework for understanding  why kin help one another across generations by combining knowledge from evolutionary biology and psychology with sociological research. Three cornerstones of evolutionarily relevant factors (i.e., genetic relatedness, sex and lineage) are combined with sociological concepts related to intergenerational solidarity and linked lives as well as need and opportunity structures. The evolutionary social science approach goes well beyond the traditional nature versus nurture distinction and can widen the single-discipline paradigm towards a multidisciplinary approach. The presentation is based on a recent book “Intergenerational family relations: an evolutionary social science approach” (Routledge, 2019).
