Summary

CHIEF (acronym for Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe's Future) is a European project of the HORIZON2020 program whose objective is to promote effective dialogue between different actors and parties involved to facilitate a future of Europe based on more inclusive notions of heritage cultural and identity The central question of the CHIEF project is: How do young people's experiences and their understanding of Europe's cultural heritage impact on the context of various educational environments in their cultural identities and their ability to participate in society and culture? Other secondary questions are: How do young people relate to the meanings and forms of European cultural heritage in various formal, non-formal and informal educational environments? How do these youths influence their skills and abilities to understand and build their cultural references that allow them to participate (or not) in society and represent their cultural identities? In what ways do young people communicate and experience culture among their peers and through the various generations?

The project is innovative in its approach and the understanding of the concept of cultural literacy of young Europeans in favoring the importance of the production and transmission of cultural knowledge in formal and non-formal educational environments as well as in the various informal human interactions . Through its research and social intervention activities, carried out in nine countries inside and outside the EU, CHIEF expects to have a significant impact on the policies and practices that facilitate intercultural dialogue in Europe. It wants to contribute to understanding and improving the cultural literacy of young people, which can result in a greater appreciation of diversity. It combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research actions of CHIEF, through the use of various methods, are designed to explore different aspects of cultural literacy, as well as different contexts of socialization and cultural participation of young people.
