The book analyses the way in which the membership to the European Union and to the Council of Europe have contributed to contain democratic regressions that are taking place in some countries of the region. In particular, it examines the role of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union in the construction of a standard of judicial independence that serves as a limit to what the book calls “illiberal drifts”.
