On November 22nd-23rd the VII Meeting of the National Chapter of the European Biomechanics Society (ESB) took place with the main mission of putting in contact professionals and researchers who develop their work in the field of Biomechanics, strengthen university-clinical-business collaboration and promote the dissemination and promotion of studies and research in Biomechanics in Spain.
Simone Tassani, researcher of BCN MedTech, presented the work of his student Irene Cuenca entitled “Linear elastic micro-finite element model of trabecular bone using Euler’s critical stress to model buckling bone’s failure” and received the “Special Mention of excellence” award
The trabecular bone structure is complex, and its mechanical failure is, therefore, difficult to predict. Nowadays, micro-CT technology and increasing computational power allow the use of micro-finite element models (micro-FEM) which represent realistic trabeculae structures, and the response of these structures to specific loads can be studied quantitatively. The objective of the work was to investigate buckling’s role in failure of trabecular bone.
The work presented was the master thesis of Irene Cuenca, and was done in collaboration with Martino Pani from University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom, and Miguel Angel Gonzalez Ballester, Jerome Noailly Simone Tassani from BCN MedTech.
