Since September, Ana Freire has been director of the Technology Unit at the UPF Barcelona School of Management. Previously, she was a researcher in the Web Science and Social Computing research group and a lecturer in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at UPF, where she played a key role in the creation of the bachelor’s degree programme in Mathematical Engineering and Data Science. One of her current lines of research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and characterize suicidal behaviours on social media. This interest resulted in the creation of the UPF-led Suicide Prevention in Social Platforms (STOP) project, which, since 2017, has sought to reduce the number of suicides in Spain.

Freire also has a strong interest in publicizing and promoting careers in science. To this end, she is the creator of and driving force behind Wisibilízalas, an international competition that aims to increase the visibility of women in science and technology in order to provide primary and secondary school students with inspirational role models.

How did the STOP project come about? What problem does it seek to eradicate?

The STOP project was created in 2017 with the aim of reducing cases of suicides. Every year, more than 3,000 people take their own lives in Spain, around 500 in Catalonia. If you count attempted suicides, the numbers can be four times higher. Most of these people had not been diagnosed or treated, in part because of the difficulty of accessing mental healthcare and the taboo surrounding this subject.

STOP aims to help people who may not be receiving psychological care and who, based on their social media presence, fit a certain risk profile.
