Pau Cuervo Vicente has opened the doors of Elkanodata to us, the company that he founded in 2012, today located on carrer Aribau in Barcelona. This is an office that exudes innovation and youth in equal parts, with most of its staff aged around the 30 mark. The working environment is relaxed in an office bathed in natural light and dominated by a minimalist aesthetic, designed to favour collaborative work.

After graduating in Economics from UPF in 2006, professional success came early for Pau. Six years after its foundation, the company made a name for itself on the international market, working with major clients like the United Nations and Spotify.

Elkanodata specialises in the creative design of information, the transformation of statistical data and complex content into attractive visual experiences. And the results of his work have gained international recognition. In 2014 the company was awarded first prize in the infographics competition held by The Economist, and in 2017 and 2018 it was recognised by the Webby Awards, the Oscars of the Internet, for two of the company’s projects.

We spoke with Pau to find out more about him and the keys to the success of his professional endeavours.

For someone who’s never heard of your company, how would you define the work you do at Elkanodata?

We define ourselves as a digital creative agency specialised in information design. Information design consists in transforming statistical data or complex information into visual experiences that facilitate the understanding and assimilation of content and are attractive to the user.

Put more simply, every product in the world has been designed to be more attractive for the consumer, to set it apart from the competition and to adapt in the best way possible to the needs of its environment.

But what happens when that product is information or data?

And, more to the point, what do we do when data is increasing exponentially in volume and complexity and information consumption trends in the digital world have changed so dramatically?

We define ourselves as a digital creative agency specialised in information design: transforming statistical data or complex information into visual experiences

We felt that, overall, there was not enough focus on the design of this product and that it wasn’t being adapted to today’s environment.

There is also a third point we should add here, which is not only how we adapt information to the digital era, but for what purpose.

In the context of fake news and misinformation, we’ve seen how information design can be a very powerful tool, and how, as such, it can be used in very negative ways.

We believe in information design as a vehicle for creating a better-informed society, allowing the causes and messages that are truly important to reach society and creating a more constructive and positive digital environment.
