Arief Budiman is an artist-filmmaker based in Yogyakarta whose practice spans moving image, installations, and experimental approaches such as collage film and desktop cinema. His work engages with speculative histories, public archives, and collective memory to uncover hidden or erased narratives, blending fiction and non-fiction to construct alternative, multi-layered histories.
Drawing on personal memories, oral histories, and popular culture, his recent projects also explore histories of violence in Indonesia and across Asia. He has received several international awards and presented his work at major festivals and exhibitions worldwide, while also being a member of the collectives MES 56 and Piring Tirbing and participating in numerous artist residencies.
