Professor Jan Deckers gave a talk on "Animal (De)liberation: Should the Consumption of Animal Products Be Banned?"

On Monday 28th November, professor Jan Deckers, from Newcastle University, presented his new book at UPF.  In his presentation he sketched the key concepts in “Animal (De)liberation: Should the Consumption of Animal Products Be Banned?”, published in 2016 with Ubiquity Press. From the recognition that a holistic concept of human health ought to be paramount, Deckers argues that qualified moral veganism must determine our dietary choices. It questions mainstream theories’ preoccupation with the infliction of pain and death, arguing instead that animalism, an extension of speciesism, ought to guide our dietary choices.

Jan Deckers is Senior lecturer in Health Care Ethics in the School of Medical Education at Newcastle University. He has taught and researched at Newcastle University (UK) since 2001. He developed his specialism in bioethics while obtaining a PhD from the University of St Andrews (Scotland), also BA's and MA's in Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).
