Synopsis

Julie (17), a young Barcelona resident adopted from China during the One-Child Policy, confronts the reality of her adoption and her relationship with her mother for the first time.

Project description

This feature-length film is a fictional autobiography script based on the screenwriter’s personal experience. The script blends fiction with documentary language by generating and manipulating archival images as both research and narrative tools.

Through these mechanisms, integrated into the diegesis of the fiction, the protagonist seeks to uncover the full story behind her adoption. The project is metalinguistic, with a highly self-aware narrative voice that reflects on storytelling itself and highlights the power of images to create meaning.

The protagonist is a young Chinese woman with an androgynous appearance who is in love with her teacher and has a complex relationship with her mother.

The project aims to create diverse representation in terms of gender and interculturality through research and engagement with communities (LGTBI+, adoptive families, Chinese communities in Barcelona).

ARSENAL ENTER intervention

The project highlights the support audiovisual works need in early stages. It emphasizes the importance of developing the script alongside continuous contact with professionals familiar with the project.

ENTER seeks to promote these meetings by considering the particularities of the story, especially the connection with the Chinese community in Barcelona and with the creators who are originally from it, in order to stimulate exchanges in this first phase of the process. Not only does it enrich the script itself, but it also helps to make its continuity in the future visible, ensuring, from the beginning, its link with the communities involved and its political and social commitment.
