HERNÁNDEZ PIZARRO, HELENA MARIA

PhD in Economics by Pompeu Fabra University. Currently, research fellow at the Centre for Research in Health and Economics (CRES) at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and adjunct professor at TecnoCampus Mataró, University School affiliated to UPF.

Her primary research field is Health Economics, with a focus on ageing and long-term care (LTC), early life conditions and mental illness. Apart from this, Helena also has interests in other branches of Applied Economics (Education, Family and Gender Economics).

For her PhD Thesis, drawing on the Spanish experience of LTC, she studies (i) the effectiveness of LTC benefits in terms of mortality, health status and wellbeing; (ii) the unintended effects of non-linear incentives of public policies and (iii) income related to LTC needs inequality. Aside from working on her thesis, Helena is currently involved in two additional projects: one analyses the long-term consequences of early life conditions, and the other examines the effects of mental-health literacy on teenagers.

She obtained an MSc. in Economics (2011) and an MSc. in Health Economics and Policy (2012) from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (BarcelonaGSE). Before that, she received a Bachelor's degree in Economics (2010) from the UPF, with a distinction in Advanced Quantitative Methods.  Helena was a visiting scholar at the Centre for Health Service Economics and Organization (CHSEO) at the University of Oxford (January-February, 2014) and with the Health Economics group at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University, Rotterdam (2015). Additionally, Helena has teaching experience as a lecturer for  undergraduate courses and as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate courses. Currently, she is a teaching assistant for the course on Public Economics (UPF - undergraduate, 2010-present). She has also taught Econometrics (UPF - undergraduate, 2010 and 2011), Labour Economics (UPF - undergraduate, 2012) and Microeconomics (BarcelonaGSE - graduate, 2014).
