The main mission of the Science, Communication and Society Studies Centre of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (CCS-UPF) is to bring society closer to science. This means, on the one hand, promoting scientific knowledge and culture among citizens and their representatives and, on the other hand, bringing R+D+i - in all its phases - closer to the needs and values of society.

In order to achieve its objectives, the CCS-UPF carries out the following activities:

  • Actions in science communication and citizen participation. Planning and organization of science communication, outreach and public participation activities, specifically in the field of health and biomedicine. Science dissemination, institutional communication, crisis communication and science museology. Development of in-house projects and participation in national and international projects. Advisory roles to researchers, projects and institutions related to the R+D+i sector.
  • Training in science communication. The Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication UPF-Barcelona School of Management (UPF-BSM), a pioneer program in Spain, celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024. Subjects in UPF Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Workshops and in-company courses in other companies and universities.
  • Research. Health communication. Public perception of science, health and environment. Public participation in science. Research about the science communication profession. Relationships between science and society. All research at the center is conducted from a gender perspective. The CCS-UPF is part of the PhD program of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at UPF.

The CCS-UPF has been recognized as a Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC+I) by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) since 2007. The UPF UCC+I is specialized in training and research.
