Title: Scientific challenges, practical methodologies and policy perspectives for trustworthy AI

Abstract:

This talk addresses the links between academic research, engineering practices and policy perspectives in the field of trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) from a European perspective. We provide a summary of the European approach for AI, analyze relevant ethical guidelines and ongoing legal initiatives, and outline some interdisciplinary scientific challenges for ensuring trustworthiness in different types of AI systems, from autonomous driving to music recommender systems.

Bio:

Senior researcher at the Joint Research Centre, European Commission (EC) leading the HUMAINT project that studies the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on human behaviour, and co-leading the AI WATCH initiative of the EC to monitor the advancements, uptake and impact of AI in Europe.

Emilia Gómez is also a Guest Professor of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, UPF, where she leads the Music Information Research lab of the Music Technology Group.

Graduated as a Telecommunication Engineer at Universidad de Sevilla, received a DEA in Acoustics, Signal Processing and Computer Science applied to Music (ATIAM) at IRCAM, Paris. In 2006, she completed her PhD at UPF. Her research background is in the Music Information Retrieval field. Starting from music, her research is focused on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on human behaviour. In particular, the study of the impact of AI on our jobs, decisions, fundamental rights and children.

Emilia Gómez has co-authored >150 peer-reviewed publications, open datasets and software packages. And she has supervised 11 PhD theses (5 ongoing) and contributed to a high number of funded projects (4 as PI). She was also a co-founder of the MTG spin-off company BMAT. Her work is recognized by citations, media appearances, honours and awards.

She was the first women president of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval, and she is particularly involved in promoting the role of and increasing opportunities for women, and improving the diversity of the MIR and AI fields.
