From 10 to 15 July, UPF’s Ciutadella campus will be hosting the 2016 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT 2016). This is the first time it has been held in our country and is the most important international meeting on information theory, a discipline that studies the mathematical fundamentals of data compression and transmission.

Albert Guillén i Fàbregas (ICREA) and Alfonso Martínez, head and member, respectively, of the Information Theory and Coding Group (ITC) of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DTIC) at UPF, the main organizers of the conference, together with Sergi Verdú, professor at Princeton University (USA).

With the participation of more than 850 academics, researchers and professors, mainly, the broad scientific programme includes five plenary sessions, five tutorial sessions, a technical part, with more than 600 presentations, and nine roundtables focusing on the subject of mentoring. In addition there will be a carefully designed social programme which will take place in various iconic locations in the city of Barcelona

In commemoration of the birth of the founder of information theory

The 2016 edition of the ISIT joins the acts to commemorate the birth of the American electronics engineer, mathematician and cryptographer who founded the theory of information and digital communications, Claude Shannon (1916-2001). Hence the conference has scheduled a keynote speech by professor Alexander Holevo of Steklov Mathematical Institute (Russia), winner of the 2016 Claude E. Shannon Award, who will give the Shannon Lecture, a presentation about the quantum information theory, which will be given by professor Holevo on Wednesday 13 July at 9.00 am in the courtyard of UPF’s Roger de Llúria building.

The quantum information theory studies the laws of transmission, processing and storage of information in systems that obey the laws of quantum physics. The subject of the conference, “The Classical Capacity of a Quantum Channel”, aims to establish a link between the classical and quantum theories and is expected to arouse a number of questions among participants.
