The Interactive Technologies Research Group is collaborating in an environmental awareness campaign

At the request of the NGO Public Eye, the 3D graphics developed in the context of the Barcelona World Race-The Game have been used to make a realistic visualization of the sea in order to raise society’s awareness of the inherent risk of pollution in the maritime transport of containers loaded with fuel.

The non-governmental organization Public Eye is working on the campaign “Dirty diesel” to raise awareness in the world against the maritime transport of containers loaded with fuel due to the danger of environmental pollution it entails. Specifically, this NGO’s action consists of returning a cargo ship with fuel from Africa to its consignor, in Switzerland, with the slogan: “Return to sender”.

The Interactive Technologies Research Group (GTI) directed by Josep Blat of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF, has collaborated in this campaign by providing a realistic-looking “visualization of the sea that represents the route of the container from Africa to Switzerland, thanks to the use of 3D graphics”, explains Javier Agenjo, computer engineer and member of the GTI, an expert in 3D for web and head of this collaboration.

The technology used on this occasion is derived from the GTI’s participation related with the Barcelona World Race (2010 and 2014), for which Barcelona World Race-The Game was created. Indeed, in 2014, in the latest edition of the transatlantic race and thanks to the use of WebGL, game users were able to enjoy 3D technology on their browsers without any need for additional prior installation, which was then a pioneering innovation in its kind.

WebGLStudio is a research project being carried out within the framework of the IMPART and KRISTINA European projects, which develops web environments in 3D without the need for any application or app, 3D tools to make them more affordable, aimed at creative designers, designers and professionals of any field that may need them.

This partnership is in line with the responsible research and innovation promoted by Pompeu Fabra University, which takes as its starting point integrity and ethics in research, risk analysis of technologies, and participation in society.
