Professor Guilhem Naro, made Chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques

The lecturer of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences has been honoured by the French Government with this award for his work in promoting the French language and culture in the world.

Professor Guilhem Naro has been honoured by the French Government and made Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques, an honorific title established by Napoleon in 1808 targeting members of the university, both foreign and French living abroad, who actively contribute to the expansion of the French language and culture in the world.

Guilhem Naro Rouquette is a third cycle doctor in General Linguistics by Université Paul Valéry de Montpellier (France), in 1987. For twelve years he was vice-dean for international relations of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation of UPF and is now mobility coordinator. He plays a prominent role in the Association of French Teachers of Catalonia (APFC). In addition, within the Department of Translation and Language Sciences (DTCL), Naro is a researcher of the Lexicographic Information Research Group (INFOLEX) of the Institute of Applied Linguistics (IULA) and his lines of research include lexicology, semantics and text analysis.

“This recognition fills me with personal but also collective pride, since it is the result of work done in a partnership with lots of help from Pompeu Fabra University, and from the French-speaking institutions in Catalonia”, explained professor Naro.

Intense dedication to the dissemination of culture and education

Several outstanding actions corroborate the acknowledgement received. In conjunction with John Beattie and Maria Wirf, professor Guilhem Naro was awarded a prize in 2010 for teaching quality by the Board of Trustees of UPF for the subject “Modern language: immersion” aimed at promoting multiculturality and multilingualism with a stage in an English-, French- or German-speaking country. In the same year, 2010, thanks to the same initiative, these lecturers received a Jaume Vicens Vives distinction from the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia.

UPF and the APFC have collaborated for many years carrying out a wide range of activities: theatre and radio contests, research work competitions, translation competitions, etc. The Faculty of Translation and Interpretation and the APFC created a translation competition, which is now in its 17th edition, aimed at promoting German and French in the Catalan secondary education system.

Regarding the competition of Research Papers in French: “Award for best Research Papers” is carried out jointly with the Catalan Department of Education and has been well received by students of Batxibac. In collaboration with the Catalan Department of Education, the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation and the APFC organize the Batxibac workshop for students of “baccalaureate”.

The Batxibac, the result of an agreement between the Ministry of Education, the Catalan Department of Education and the French Ministère de l’Education, is a mixed training course in two languages. At the end of their education and after passing the baccalaureate, as well as a French language test, students receive the double high school Batxillerat-Baccalaureate qualification.
