New awards for PhD students at the Department

Jordi Pons receives the AI grant given by Nad Friedman. Jordina Torrents, recipient of the Google Women Techmakers Award. Ishari Amarashinge granted a Grace Hooper Student Scholarship.

Jordi Pons, PhD student at the MTG in the project Machine learning approaches for structuring large sound and music collections , has been awarded one of the AI Grants given by Nad Friedman. As part of the award, Jordi will get $5,000 to support his work on creating a dataset of sounds from Freesound and using it in his research. Additional details in this news

Jordina Torrents, part of BCN Med Tech, drivers of the Bio Image and Signal Analysis  project, has been awarded the Google Techmakers Award. Jordina has been one of the 20 students selected in the region Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the only one in Spain and the second one at UPF receiving the award, after Luz Rello in 2011. In addition to the financial award, it includes a stay at Google King’s Cross Office to share their work with the other awardees and the Google community  (details in this UPF press release and get to know Jordina with more details in this radio interview - SER radio, in Catalan).

Finally, Ishari Amarashinge, working in the project Educational Data Science as part of the collaboration between the Educational Technologies Research Line and the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group, has been awarded a Grace Hopper Celebration Student Scholarship to attend the 2017 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) in Orlando, Florida, October 4-6, 2017.
