Launch of a new system to simplify texts in English
The mission of Able to Include is to create an open source and accessible technology that can be integrated into existing ICT tools, such as mobile applications, so that people with intellectual disability can interact better with computer software.
It is an international project within the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) of the European Union, coordinated by the Spanish company Ariadna Servicios Informáticos (ASI) involving Horacio Saggion, a member of the Natural Language Processing research group (TALN) of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF in conjunction with European partners in Belgium, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Romania.
The application developed at the TALN to simplify texts in English for the Consortium is available for iOS and Android and is part of a series of existing technologies to create applications in open source and in a context of layered accessibility that when integrated with current and future ICT tools, will improve the daily lives of people with disability through the understanding of their personal situation and helping them interact with the information society.
As Saggion states, "this is a first version for simplifying texts in English that we think will be broadly disseminated and will be enhanced as users use it".
The services being developed within the Able to Include consortium aim for commonly written language to be accessible to persons with intellectual disability. To this end work is being done on text simplifiers, on the creation of pictograms and text icons, on translators and on text-to-speech converters.
