When to congratulate Cheryl of Singapore, a dilemma of logic solved almost instantly
While the internet was trying to elucidate when Cheryl's birthday was, a logic problem that has turned viral involving children of 14-15 years of age in a mathematics competition in Singapore, a researcher at UPF's Department of Information Technology and Communications (DTIC) came up with the solution to the dilemma in 1.5 seconds.
Writing "Bernard" takes longer than was needed by the programme developed by Filippos Kominis, researcher of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group (AI) directed by Hector Geffner, ICREA researcher at UPF's DTIC, as part of his doctoral thesis.
Kominis says, "many have stopped to reflect something along the lines of: "if Bernard said that Albert didn't know, then he knows that the other one cannot know if ..., and their calculations have filled up loads of notebooks".
