UPF, the best university in Spain for Business and Economics and Social Sciences, according to the Times Higher Education rankings by subjects
The World University Rankings 2019 by Subject by Times Higher Education (THE) has recently published the rankings for Business and Economics and Social Sciences, which both include UPF.
In the list of Business and Economics (which includes studies in business and management, accounting and finance, economics and econometrics), UPF comes 57th overall. Thus, it remains the first university in the State and comes fifteenth in Europe. The following universities in Spain to appear in the ranking are the UAB, in the 101-125 bracket, the University of Navarra (151-175) and the Carlos III de Madrid (176-200).

The weighting system used for the THE ranking by Subject is the same as for its general ranking and is based on 13 performance indicators (although the methodology is rebalanced to adapt to the peculiarities of each subject) corresponding to five major areas.
The score achieved by UPF, with a global score of 60.5 points, is as follows: Teaching (54.8), Research (59.1), Citations in publications (69.8), Internationalization (60.5) and Transfer (60.1).
The ranking is led by two U.S. universities (Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University, which switch positions compared to last year), followed by three British universities: Oxford, Cambridge and London School of Economics and Political Science.
Improved ranking in Social Sciences
With regard to the ranking in Social Sciences (which includes communication and media studies, politics and international studies, sociology and geography), UPF has improved its position with respect to the previous edition: this year is in the 126-150 bracket, as the first university in Spain (along with the UAB), while in last year’s rankings it was in the 151-175 range. Following UPF are the Autonomous University of Madrid (201-250 bracket) and the University of Barcelona (251-300).
UPF obtains an average score of 45 points. Broken down by fields, UPF scored 36.2 for Teaching, 28.8 for Research, 76.7 for Citations, 53 for Internationalization, and 39.9 for Transfer.
At the top of the list in the Social Sciences, which has this year increased to 666 centres, are the universities of Oxford (Great Britain), which leads the table for the second year in a row, followed by Stanford, MIT, Harvard and Princeton universities, all in the United States.
