Ricardo Baeza-Yates appointed chief scientist at the laboratory of Yahoo! Research

Lecturer of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies and head of the Web Research Group, he has held this position since early October.

From 1 October, Ricardo Baeza-Yates will assume new responsibilities as head scientist of the Yahoo Labs research laboratory.

As stated by Xavier Binefa, head of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at Pompeu Fabra University, “professor Ricardo Baeza-Yates will help us to continue bringing research excellence to all our research teams and in all our activities, and will make use of our efforts to expand our already impressive applied science”.  

And, he added, “helping us to find new opportunities for external promotion and recognition for our scientists and engineers”. At UPF, professor Baeza-Yates is a full professor and director of PhD students.

Ricardo Baeza-Yates is the founder and principal investigator of the Web Research Group (GRW) of UPF’s DTIC. His areas of research focus on algorithms and data structures, information retrieval, web data mining, text and multimedia databases, software and data base visualization, and interaction with the user.

He has held different positions of responsibility within Yahoo! Research in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, as well as in Spain and Chile. He is a member of the council of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest society in the field of information technology (2012-2016).
