Luz Rello receives the European Young Researchers Award 2013 in Copenhagen

At an official ceremony held on 21 June, within the framework of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF). This distinction acknowledges the work of young researchers at the start of their career. Rello is to read her doctoral thesis at UPF on 27 June, with a dissertation supervised by Ricardo Baeza-Yates and Horacio Saggion.

On 21 June, within the framework of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), held in Copenhagen (Denmark) from 21 to 26 June, the prize giving ceremony was held of the European Young Researchers Award (EYRA), given in 2013 to the young Spanish researcher  Luz Rello.

rello2With this distinction, the independent association  Euroscience acknowledges the work carried out by young researchers who, despite being at the start of their scientific career, display the ability to develop high quality ground-breaking research projects.

Luz Rello, a researcher at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF was chosen as the winner of this edition for her work in the field of computing and internet access, principally focusing on a subject of great social interest:  dyslexia, which research has given rise to numerous articles and communications at international congresses.

She is to read her thesis straight after the ESOF

At eleven o'clock on  27 June at the auditorium of the Communication campus - Poblenou,  Luz Rello will be reading her doctoral thesis which was supervised by Ricardo Baeza-Yates, vice chairman for research in Europe of Yahoo! and part-time professor of Computer Sciences and Artificial Intelligence at the DTIC at UPF and coordinator of the research group on data mining,  WRG, together with Horacio Saggion, investigator of the research group on Natural Language Processing  TALN, at the DTIC.

rello1Luz Rello has a degree in Linguistics by the Complutense University of Madrid (2008), in which she achieved the highest qualification in Spain. She received a " La Caixa" scholarship for her master's degree studies into Natural Language Processing. While carrying out her doctorate at UPF she has received several scholarships including the " Google Anita Borg Scholar" and the " Santander JPI Premium Scholar".

Her research has been recognized at  various competitions, such as the Archimedes University Research Contest (2007), Mavir (2010), Vodafone Foundation Smart Accessibility Awards (2012) and The Paciello Group Web Accessibility Challenge (2013).

Sixth edition of the ESOF: Europe's biggest encounter with science

The president of the European Commission and the Queen of Denmark inaugurated the sixth edition of the ESOF, which is held biannually and devoted to scientific research, technology and innovation whose slogan this year was " Science, building bridges". It received  4,500 participants from 75 countries, including six Nobel prize-winners. Europe's biggest scientific meeting. Barcelona held the third edition in 2008.
