This week, on October 19 and 20, the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) at Pompeu Fabra University is holding its annual symposium. Two days to explore the frontiers of biomedicine in an event held in the auditorium of the Biomedical Research Park of Barcelona. An event aimed at biomedical researchers based in the Barcelona metropolitan area that is free of charge, but requires prior registration

"The annual MELIS symposium is an excellent opportunity to experience new forms of research in all areas of biomedicine, reflecting the broad research interests of our department," says Jordi Garcia - Ojalvo, director of the MELIS Department.

The symposium features seven 45-minute talks covering a wide range of biomedical topics. This year, the microbiome, cancer, development, protein design, bioimaging analysis and behavior will be the selected topics.

For the first time, this two-day event features a talk by a Medical Doctor, in this case, Fernando Burdío, from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, to represent the faculty who have recently joined the Department to teach the UPF Medicine degree.

The list of speakers will be completed by Mireia Vallès-Colomer, the latest group leader to join the Department, who will present her research project developed at the University of Trento; David Baker, from the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington (online); Virgine Uhlmann, from EMBL - EBI in Cambridge; Christian Schröter, from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology; Arnau Busquets-García, also from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, and Cristina Pina, from Brunel University in London.

In addition, this year there will be a new activity intended for younger researchers. A flash talk session aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral students of the Department who will have 4 minutes to present their research. In turn, the public will have the opportunity to vote to select the best talk and award the winner with a "travel grant" to attend a scientific conference during this academic year.
