The first edition of the Deep Learning Barcelona Symposium (DLBCN 2018) will be held on 20 and 22 December on the North campus of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Its main goal is to show the research conducted in Barcelona in this field, at a unique meeting gathering multidisciplinary researchers and showing the city’s potential to become the epicentre of Artificial Intelligence in southern Europe.

Deep learning is the engine of the current technological revolution around artificial intelligence. The symposium brings together world-class researchers who either carry out their research in Barcelona or trained there but now work abroad. Among them are Oriol Vinyals, one of the world references in deep learning, currently with Google Deepmind, and Antonio Torralba, director of the new programme designed by the MIT to understand intelligence.

The symposium is organized by the main local universities and research centres in the field of deep learning, including Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), with the participation of the departments of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) and of Translation and Language Sciences (DTCL). UPF concentrates talent in artificial intelligence in areas as diverse as music technology, computer vision, and computational linguistics. The Organizing Committee of the symposium involves researchers Coloma Ballester, Emilia Gómez and Xavier Serra of the DTIC; Gemma Boleda and Carina Silberer, of the DTCL at UPF.

UPF researchers present their works

Kristina Gulordava will be participating in the language session which will be chaired by Gemma Boleda, both researchers at the Computational Linguistics and Linguistic Theory (COLT) research group of the DTCL. Gemma Boleda is also the main speaker in the Multimodal session. The Computer Vision session involves Coloma Ballester, a researcher of the research group in Image Processing (GPI), the DTIC, who also chairs the session. And in the last session, dedicated to Audio, several members of the DTIC’s Music Technology Group (MTG) will be present. Jordi Pons and Merlijn Blaauw will be presenting their work around deep learning applied to sound and music; Xavier Serra and Emilia Gómez will chair this session. Finally, PhD students Laura Aina and Ionut Sorodoc (COLT, DTCL) will present in the poster session.
