On 3 June, UPF is to invest the physicist, philosopher and activist Vandana Shiva honoris causa

UPF will be awarding its highest distinction to Shiva, a physicist and a doctor of Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, in recognition of her academic contribution to fields such as intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics and genetic engineering. The event will be held on the Ciutadella campus and the laudatory speech for the ecofeminist activist will be given by the full professor of Ethics and Political Economy of Communication of the Department of Communication, Núria Almiron.

Xavier Amatriain, doctor in engineering from the UPF and AI expert: "It will soon be unthinkable to work without artificial intelligence"

Xavier Amatriain, a renowned telecommunications engineer and AI expert, has spent much of his career in Silicon Valley, USA, and is currently vice-president of Product AI Strategy at Google. On 21 May he will return to the UPF, where he obtained his doctorate in Information and Communications Technologies in 2005. He will give a talk during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Engineering studies at the UPF.

MTG i la Fundació Phonos apropen la música a usuaris d'implants coclears

Un original concert obert a tothom que està despertant un gran interès i que tindrà lloc el 9 de febrer, a les 12.00 h a l'auditori de Caixa Forum de Barcelona. Una activitat que forma part del projecte musIC, una iniciativa del MTG.

L'implant coclear és una pròtesi auditiva que permet recuperar l'audició de la parla però té moltes limitacions en l'escolta musical. Amb aquest objectiu s'organitza un concert que tindrà lloc el proper  9 de febrer a les 12.00 h a l'auditori de Caixa Forum Barcelona i ha estat especialment dissenyat tenint en compte les limitacions en l'escolta musical de les persones usuàries d'aquestes pròtesis auditives i que a més està pensat per al públic general.

musICposterEl projecte mus IC (acrònim de Música per a Implants Coclears) del Grup de recerca en Tecnologia Musical (MTG) del Departament de Tecnologies de la Informació i les Comunicacions (DTIC) de la UPF, en col·laboració amb la Fundació PHONOS té com a objectiu apropar la música als usuaris d'aquests dispositius per tal de comprendre millor com aquestes persones escolten la música i contribuir amb això a la millora dels seus implants.

Investigadors, usuaris i artistes treballant conjuntament

És doncs una iniciativa en l'àmbit de la tecnologia musical, amb molt pocs precedents al món, en què investigadors i artistes s'uneixen a favor de les persones amb deficiències auditives que requereixen d'implants coclears.

En el decurs del concert es podrà escoltar peces inèdites interpretades amb diferents instruments i formacions: un quartet de corda i flauta, una soprano, piano, guitarra i ReacTable, un instrument electrònic interactiu desenvolupat pel Grup de recerca en Tecnologia Musical.

En la preparació del repertori per al concert han participat persones usuàries d'implants coclears que han donat suggeriments als compositors tenint en compte factors com el ritme i les melodies perquè les puguin percebre millor.  Amb aquest concert es pretén conèixer millor com es percep la música, i els assistents podran contribuir a la investigació participant en una enquesta sobre aquesta experiència musical.

L'entrada és gratuïta i està obert tant a persones amb implant coclear com a públic general. A les 10:30h està programada una presentació de les novetats del sistema d'implant coclear a càrrec de l'empresa Advanced Bionics, entitat que ha col·laborat donant suport a l'acte.
