On 3 June, UPF is to invest the physicist, philosopher and activist Vandana Shiva honoris causa

UPF will be awarding its highest distinction to Shiva, a physicist and a doctor of Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, in recognition of her academic contribution to fields such as intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics and genetic engineering. The event will be held on the Ciutadella campus and the laudatory speech for the ecofeminist activist will be given by the full professor of Ethics and Political Economy of Communication of the Department of Communication, Núria Almiron.

Xavier Amatriain, doctor in engineering from the UPF and AI expert: "It will soon be unthinkable to work without artificial intelligence"

Xavier Amatriain, a renowned telecommunications engineer and AI expert, has spent much of his career in Silicon Valley, USA, and is currently vice-president of Product AI Strategy at Google. On 21 May he will return to the UPF, where he obtained his doctorate in Information and Communications Technologies in 2005. He will give a talk during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Engineering studies at the UPF.

Investigadors del Grup de Recerca en Web guanyen l'Innova Challenge Big Data

Una competició internacional que impulsa el BBVA i que ha atorgat el primer premi al projecte Qkly i un segon premi per a Quartz, ambdós projectes de Luca Chiarandini i Michele Trevisiol, doctorands dirigits per Ricardo Baeza-Yates, catedràtic del DTIC i director de Yahoo! Research.

Innova Challenge és una competició de caire internacional que impulsa el BBVA i que enguany s'ha centrat en el maneig i processament de dades: "Big Data".

qkly El guanyador, dins la categoria d'aplicacions per a consumidors, ha estat per a Qkly, un projecte de Luca Chiarandini i Michele Trevisiol, doctorands del Grup de Recerca en Web (WRG)del Departament de Tecnologies de la Informació i les Comunicacions (DTIC) de la UPF,  sota la supervisió de Ricardo Baeza-Yates, catedràtic del DTIC i director de Yahoo! Research.  

A més, aquests mateixos investigadors han obtingut un segon premi pel desenvolupament de l'eina de visualització  Quartz.

Qkly és una aplicació que proporciona informació sobre empreses, oci, reserves, viatges, etc., en base a les preferències de l'usuari i que pronostica el millors moments del dia per evitar aglomeracions, cues, etc. Aquest planificador ajuda els usuaris a evitar les llargues esperes a establiments i serveis de pagament, optimitzant el seu temps i fent possible que determinades gestions es facin de manera més ràpida i eficaç.

quartz Quartz és una eina de visualització que permet que un conjunt de dades puguin ser vistes des de diverses perspectives,  ajudant a descobrir correlacions entre els diferents factors. Per exemple l'aplicació pot donar informació sobre com les persones gasten els seus diners, en una determinada localització, segons el gènere del consumidor i per categories de negoci.
