The Teachers and Science programme of the Catalonia - La Pedrera Foundation offers the possibility of encouraging meetings between young researchers and Catalan research centres to exchange experiences through the MISTI (MIT International Science & Technology Initiatives) Global Teaching Lab), a programme of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.

During three weeks of January, specially selected students trained in teaching quality at MIT had the opportunity to teach science, technology, engineering or mathematics at twelve selected secondary schools in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.

As part of this programme, the students from MIT in Boston were invited to visit Catalan research centres. On 25 January they came to the Department of Information and Communications Technologies (DTIC) at Pompeu Fabra University to find out about its research areas and especially the activities carried out by the researchers of the Music Technology Group (MTG), one of the centres participating in the Teachers and Science programme.

The MTG is a partner centre of the programme and organizes workshops through creative activities and methodology concerning the science of sound “Sounds of Barcelona”, the interactive musical table “Reactable”, or the voice synthesizer, “Vocaloid”.

The Synthetic, Perceptive, Emotive and Cognitive research group (SPECS) pertaining to the DTIC is also participating in the Teachers and Science programme of the Catalonia - La Pedrera Foundation through the activity “Brain, intelligent systems and robotics” and a delegation of students from MIT is expected to pay it a visit next summer.
