The main goal of the ECODAL project (Evaluación de la competencia discursiva de aprendices adultos plurilingües: Detección de necesidades formativas y pautas para un aprendizaje autónomo - Evaluation of the discursive skills of adult multilingual learners: Detection of training requirements and guidelines for self-learning) is twofold: firstly, it seeks to investigate the language skills and knowledge shown by adult multilingual learners in the production of oral, written and multimodal discourse genres both in their own language and in the additional languages in which they have achieved a threshold level (B1); and, secondly, based on the training needs identified, the project aims to set up a teaching model to steer the development and evaluation of multilingual discourse competence. ECODAL has received a grant from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to the amount of 61,200 euros, in the Excellence modality, and will last three years.

This teaching model will contribute specific resources to promote the autonomy of language learners, enrich teaching assessment practices and improve teaching materials on degree courses, in official language schools and university language centres.

The project has five working languages: German, French, English, Spanish, and Catalan. The research team consists of students of each of these languages, who share research interests in language teaching and learning, text linguistics and discourse analysis.

More specifically, the ECODAL project team involves researchers of the Learning and Teaching Languages Research Group (GR@EL) of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences (DTCL) at UPF: Carmen López Ferrero (project PI), Encarnación AtienzaCarme BachMaria Dolors CañadaOlga Esteve and Ernesto Martín Peris; and members of the DTCL: Laura BorràsCarmen González and María Naranjo.

The team also involves researchers from other domestic and foreign universities working in the same field: Asuncion Bes (Université du Luxembourg), Manel Lacorte (University of Maryland), Eduardo Negueruela (University of Navarra), and Sònia Oliver del Olmo (Autonomous University of Barcelona). Further collaborators are teachers at official language schools and DTCL PhD students who are carrying out their doctoral thesis along the lines of research into language learning and discourse.
