Evaluation and deployment of an industrial spring-based RFID reader antenna

  • Abstract
  • Context-aware scenarios require sensing technologies to obtain information about the environment. The RFID EPC Gen2 technology is the de facto standard in such scenarios like retail. However, covering a large surface with RFID antennas to implement a full context-aware system requires a huge investment. We present the design, implementation and evaluation of a helical antenna based on a low-cost standard industrial spring. With a simple fixation to the ground plane and a simple matching mechanism, the antenna achieves a gain of 6 dBi. We evaluate the performance of the proposed RFID reader antenna in real retail store environments.
