Resum:

The Political Translation research project brings together different approaches to the politics of translation in the social sciences and translation studies. The social sciences literature on globalisation has devoted more attention to the circulation of information, ideas, people, and goods, often perceived as unproblematically leading to global homogenisation, while failing to examine its complex forms in different local contexts. Translation studies is yet to substantially engage in wider debates on the role of translation in the diffusion and transformation of policy, social movements and human rights. Based on a view of translation as cosmopolitan, critical and transformative, the project will develop an interdisciplinary conceptual formulation of the politics of translation.

This new formulation will examine forms of political translation that defy current binary categories, such as migrant literature. I argue that, despite some recent ethical and homogenous approaches to translation, a thorough revision of certain vocabularies is still needed to definitively break with lingering binary and national tropes. I challenge Venuti’s foreignisation based on its most problematic but previously overlooked aspect: its reliance on national paradigms and circumscribed domestic and foreign groups. While these make sense when it comes to disrupting the norms of the cultural or academic elite in national institutions, they are untenable when considering diverse readers and contexts of reception.
