Abstract

The study of children with early unilateral brain injury (BI) provides a unique window into the plasticity of language development. Different than adults with similar lesions, these children, as a group, tend to perform within the low-normal to normal range even when lesions encompass classic language networks. However, language trajectories of children with early BI greatly vary from each other. Prior work focused on the role of biological factors in explaining this variability. This talk will highlight the adaptive view of brain development. We will discuss brain plasticity in the context of both biological and environmental factors that affect brain and behaviour over the course of development. Theoretical as well as clinical implications of this view will be considered.
