Laia Albó won the SEBAP mobility award and visited University of Pittsburgh (USA)

The PhD candidate Laia Albó, from the TIDE research group, was granted one of the 15 mobility awards 2018-2019 from the "Societat Econòmica Barcelonesa Amics del País" (SEBAP). The award consisting of 4,200€, was used for a three months research stay at the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, The United States) under the hosting of Prof. Peter Brusilovsky from the Personalized Adaptive Web Systems Lab (PAWS) within the School of Computing and Information.

The award was officially given on March 25, 2019, at the "Saló de Cent" of the City Hall of Barcelona in a ceremony led by Mr. Miquel Roca (President of SEBAP) and the Deputy Mayor Mr. Gerardo Pisarello. Laia was coducting her research stay from February until May of 2019 and her research was focused on the use of intelligent systems that facilitate more effective support in the design of blended courses. During the stay she explored the potentialities that the data analytics generated by the blended learning design environments may have in order to facilitate personalized and effective support in the design of blended learning educational practices

As a result of the collaboration during the research stay, the following full research article was achieved and it was presented at the European Conference on Technology-Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL) 2019, last September in Delft (The Netherlands).

The article introduces concept-level design analytics, a knowledge-based visualization, which uncovers facets of the learning activities that are being authored. The visualization is integrated into edCrumble (a lesson planning tool from the TIDE research group). The article presents a within-subjects user study to compare the use of the design tool both with and without the visualization. The authors studied the differences in terms of cognitive load, design outcomes and user actions within the system to compare both conditions to the objective of evaluating the impact of using design analytics during the decision-making phase of course design.

The SEBAP mobility awards promote annual competitive scholarships to researchers and doctoral students linked to Catalan universities and research centers to make a minimum stay of three months in foreign research centers and universities, with the aim of promoting the development of research and teaching at the Catalan universities.
