Marc Beardsley is in the 4th year of his PhD studies in the Department of Information and Communications Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. His research interests lie at the intersection of neuroscience and education – and include learning design, the science of learning (spaced learning), social and emotional learning, and responsible approaches to learning technologies research.
Marc is an experienced project manager and entrepreneur and has lived and worked in Vancouver, Bangkok, Tokyo and Barcelona.
[Research]
- Involved in the development of educational technologies such as a SEL classroom orchestration tool (ClassMood App); a SEL learning design evaluation tool (Soele); and a citizen-science app involving the emotional annotation of music and aiming to cultivate learner emotional awareness with music (TBD).
- Lead author of publications in the British Journal of Educational Technology (BJET), Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (JCAL), and European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL) (in press).
- Generated grant funding of more than EUR 600,000 for institutions participating in European projects that he wrote proposals for.
- Active project lead for two Erasmus+ projects involving partners in Finland, Denmark, Greece, Portugal and Spain. The first project being led is Erasmus+ Project Illuminated (2017-2020) – Illuminating Effective Teaching Strategies with the Science of Learning; the second is Erasmus+ Project Spotlighters (2018-2021) – Illuminating student paths to resilience with the science of stress
[Teaching]
- Teaches classes in two undergraduate and one masters courses. In each course, has led the creation of grading scales and contributed to the instructional design of the Adaptive Behaviour masters course..
- Produced workshops for educators on the Science of Learning and directly led training workshops in Finland, Spain, and Egypt.
- Developed and led a three-day teach-the-teacher workshop on the Science of learning in Portugal, attended by educators from Finland, Greece, Spain, and Portugal.
- Produced classroom lessons for first year undergraduate and high school students on the science of stress, data privacy/data sharing risks, and on the science of learning.
- Was trained in the Berlitz Method and taught at Berlitz Japan for 3 years, and was trained as a Memory Trainer by the ThinkBuzan Institute in 2014.
- Developed and taught training programs for international hotel properties, retail chains, restaurants and government entities over a 5-year period.
[Project Management]
He has been a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) since 2015 and received a Masters Certificate in Project Management from the University of Victoria. He has managed online projects for automobile, entertainment and government entities and has led the development of online and offline products such as a customer-service English e-learning platform for hotels; an e-commerce (daily deals) platform; and a series of customer service training programs for hotels, restaurants, shops, and government entities.
[Entrepreneurship]
For 10 years, Marc worked in organizations he founded or co-founded. These organizations employed over 30 people; included both bootstrapped and venture capital funded initiatives (Japanese and European venture capital firms); and were featured in media including Newsweek Japan, CNBC, TechCrunch Japan, Nikkei Shimbun. Marc also co-founded and helped manage a non-profit supporting entrepreneurs that ran 60 seminars over a 7-year period.
