The History of Science Unit (HSU) has a lively and supportive research culture, offering opportunities for research training at PhD level. It welcomes and supports PhD candidates.
The HSU participates in the official Master in History of Science organized by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat de Barcelona (the master is formally recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation with the quality mention). The HSU also collaborates in the PhD program in History of Science (UB-UAB), and in the PhD programs in History and Humanities of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
To enroll in a PhD program students are required either to have earned a minimum of 60 ECTS from an official postgraduate program, or to hold an official master didloma. Whichever the case, they are also required to have won a minimum of 15 research credits and a minimum total of 300 ECTS from graduate and postgraduate studies.
PhD applicants who do not meet these requirements are recommended to enroll in the official Master in History of Science mentioned above. In general, we expect PhD applicants to have a strong background in the history of science, technology and/or medicine: for instance, a Masters-level qualification in the subject. Candidates meeting the ECTS requirements mentioned above, but who do not have previous background in history of science, technology or medicine, will normally be requested to take one or more of our postgraduate courses. These courses are designed to give them the intellectual grounding and practical skills needed to do original research.
