Installing Duplicati

In this section we will review the installation of Duplicati depending on your Operating System (OS). When we are using a backup software we want to make sure that the software starts automatically on our system after we reboot or launch it anew. We will address this issue particularly for each OS right after we explain the installation of Duplicati. Prior to installing Duplicati, we need to download the correct installation package from their webpage.

Linux

Download the installer for your distribution and open it when it has finished downloading. It will open the Ubuntu Software application, like in the image below. Click on “Install” and follow the installation instructions.

After doing several tests, it seems that Duplicati does not start with your system in the case of linux. To address this issue in linux, we need to open the search bar on our computer and type “start”. This will show us some applications but we want to focus on the one with this icon (Startup Applications):

Open the application and you will be prompted this window:

Click on “Add” and you will be asked to input a name, command and comment for your startup program.

We want to introduce a name that helps us identify we are setting up the startup of Duplicati. We also need to to find the location of “Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon.exe” in our computer. By default it should be something like /usr/lib/duplicati/Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon.exe. Once everything is set, click “save” and restart your computer to confirm all has been set properly. If done properly, this icon should appear in your taskbar.

Windows

Download the installer for your distribution and open it when it has finished downloading. (In this case it will be a *.msi file) Execute it and follow the steps on the setup wizard.

Pretty straight forward! Now, we are going to check that Duplicati runs on the startup. Open up the “run” application on your computer, type “msconfig” and hit enter.

Move to the “Startup” tab and locate Duplicati there, as shown in the next image. The tick indicates that the software will start automatically when you boot your computer.

Mac

Download the installer for your distribution and open it when it has finished downloading. (In this case it will be a *.dmg file).

Once we have Duplicati up and running, it is time to configure it to launch on startup. Follow these steps:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to Users & Groups.
  3. Choose your nickname.
  4. Choose Login Items tab.
  5. Press the "+" sign below.
  6. Locate Duplicati on Applications.
  7. Select it and it will be added to the list.
  8. Check the button next to it.
  9. Restart your Mac to make the changes.
